Tourism Tasmania is preparing for an anticipated increase in the state’s caravan and motorhome visitor market through the new Spirit of Tasmania ferries.

Visitors generally experience Tasmania in a car, caravan or motorhome, including hire vehicles. Research from the Tasmanian Visitor Survey shows that travellers on the Spirit of Tasmania stay longer, spend more and travel further into our regions, with national parks and reserves some of Tasmania’s most popular attractions for the caravan and motorhome market.

Tourism Tasmania has prepared a Caravan and Motorhome Visitor Market Profile [PDF, 9MB] to help industry develop their products and experiences to attract and cater for this growing market.

Market research undertaken by BDA Marketing Planning in 2022 indicates that there is latent demand in the interstate caravan and motorhome market, noting that an increased awareness in Tasmania from this market could attract between 7,000 and 17,000 additional camping and motorhome visitors annually.

Tourism Tasmania also commissioned ERA Planning to develop a Caravan and Motorhome Market Plan that assesses the demand potential of this visitor market, and maps infrastructure and services relevant to these travellers.

The plan, which is aligned with the 2030 Visitor Economy Strategy, has informed the allocation of government investment in the Spirit Preparedness Fund, including funding for priority national park and local government infrastructure and services, marketing and traffic management planning.
