Car Hire - Tasmania
Tasmania’s car hire sector is currently facing challenges in rebuilding vehicle fleets in response to the COVID-19 shutdown last year.
It is taking some time for hire car stocks to return to ‘normal’ across Australia, due in part to global supply chain delays for motor vehicles and parts.
If you are having difficulty finding available vehicles, Tasmania has many excellent guided tours operators, all with COVID-safe plans in place.
Options are available from half-day through to multi-day experiences, by coach, motorbike, bicycle or even four wheel drive. Specialised small escorted group touring is also available and can be designed to suit your particular interests. Let a local help you uncover an authentic Tassie experience, explore our tour options here.
Holiday wholesalers or travel agents may be able to assist in vehicle hire or you could explore car sharing apps. Information on bus and coach services in Tasmania is available here.
We also encourage visitors to consider travelling in the shoulder season and winter months as the State’s four seasons provide a uniquely Tasmanian experience.
Hire and drive reimbursement program
The Tasmanian Government is providing up to $1 million in grants to support hire and drive operators impacted by COVID-19 to re-establish their vehicle fleets.
The program also encourages the sign-up of new vehicles to accredited car sharing platforms, Car Next Door and Evee.
The program is open until 24 December 2021, or until available funds have been exhausted.
