Tasmania riding the wave of mountain bike tourism

Peter Gutwein, Minister for State Growth

Tourism is a major driver of economic growth and jobs creation in our State, and the Hodgman Liberal Government is helping boost the industry by investing $129 million into the sector.

We have a vision to take tourism in Tasmania to the next level, and the unveiling of the next stage of the world-leading Blue Derby trail network will do just that.

The Liberal Government is a strong supporter of the Blue Derby bike trails and we have contributed $800,000 into its development from our Cycling Tourism Fund. Along with this, the Government has also committed over $300,000 to support racing events on the trails.

Derby is truly a world class destination for mountain biking. The investment in Derby has seen the enormously successful Enduro World Series held in the township in April 2017 and such was the quality of the trails and the success of the championships, the World Enduro Series returns to Derby in March 2019.

It is remarkable that this small town in north east Tasmania will be one of nine championship destinations including New Zealand, Portugal, Italy, France, California, Canada and Switzerland, that will host the event in 2019

The new additions for the trail network will cater for all mountain bikers, and provide year round tourism experiences in Derby.

Mountain biking has provided Derby with never-before-seen tourism opportunities and created vibrancy in the town.

Since being elected, the Hodgman Liberal Government has focused on taking our State to the next level by investing record amounts into job creating infrastructure.

We will continue to deliver on our Plan to not only increase the number of visitors to the island, but also for them to stay longer, see more of our State and spend more while they are here.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is ensuring investment in our tourism sector is targeted to enable sustainable growth in tourism that protects what’s special about Tasmania.
