New trout season opens

Sarah Courtney, Minister for Primary Industries and Water

Tasmania’s world class brown trout fishery opens today for the 2018-19 season.

The Hodgman Liberal Government is a passionate supporter of our inland fisheries which attracts more than 26,000 recreational licensed anglers each year.

We have made it cheaper to go trout fishing by freezing licence fees for the next four years at last year’s (2017-18) level.

The opening of the new trout season is keenly anticipated by thousands of anglers and good lake heights and strong river flows are expected to create excellent fishing conditions right from the start.

Wild brown trout were first introduced to Tasmania in 1864 and the fishery is now regarded as one of the best in the world and attracts more than 5000 interstate and overseas anglers every year.

While a major tourism drawcard, we are also ensuring that trout fishing remains a valued tradition for many Tasmanian families and regional communities underpinning many local businesses and jobs.

In June the Tasmanian Government released the Tasmanian Inland Recreational Fishery Management Plan 2018-28 to help grow and develop recreational trout fishing by providing better opportunities for anglers, assess fishery performance and manage fish stocks for future generations.

This Plan aims to balance individual fishery management at key lakes and rivers, standardise fishing regulations and increase participation locally and from tourism markets.

The Tasmanian Government is also supporting the peak anglers’ group Anglers Alliance Tasmania with $215,000 over four years to improve the fishery, investing in community amenities at high visitation waters, and we are also a major supporter of the 2019 World Fly Fishing Championships which will further shine the international spotlight on Tasmania.

The coming 2018-19 trout season is shaping up as even better than last year and I encourage as many people as possible to buy a licence through their local tackle shop, Service Tasmania, or online from the IFS and enjoy the great trout fishing that Tasmania has to offer.
